Notes: A strong nor’easter had brought three days of howling wind and rain to Hatteras Island, and on the fourth day it cleared up enough for my friends and I to go surfing. Not expecting any real swell, I had only brought my 9’6’ noserider to the Outer Banks. The waves were a bit too large and barreling too close to shore for a board that long, but I decided to paddle out anyway and give it the old college dropout try. I made it out past the breakers, but the side shore winds were still strong, and after a solid hour of being blown down the beach out (followed by a rather harrowing paddle in back to shore), I threw in the towel without catching a single wave and grabbed my camera. My friends Patrick and Andrew were ripping on their short boards though, and I got this shot of Patty as he caught his breath on the beach in between waves. Even though I didn’t actually surf that day, I still felt great- the ocean always cleanses me, and as we say about our troubles when we go surf, for an hour I had “left it on the shore.”
