Notes: For the last decade, the world seems to have steadily gone crazier and crazier. Life has always been strange, but when things got weird, there was one person I could count on to make me laugh with his savagely witty take on current affairs (no matter how tragic or bizarre), and that person was David Murray Brockie— aka Oderus Urungus of the almighty GWAR. Dave’s been gone for ten years now, and the world is a much poorer place for it. I miss the man dearly, not a day goes by that I don’t think about him, and I see reminders of him everywhere I look in our mutual hometown. This mural painted by local artist and musician Austin Fitch is one of my favorite of those reminders, and during the COVID-19 pandemic I would often walk by it during my nighttime rambles. Invariably I would stop in front of the giant Brockie, look up at him, and say out loud “GODDAMMIT, Dave— why aren’t you here to witness all this wild- ass bullshit? We need you right about now...” I’m glad Dave’s in a better place, but when I die one of the very first first things I’m gonna do when I get to the afterlife is give him a huge ration of shit for missing out on the high weirdness that is life in today’s world. I’m sure he’ll have some hilarious observations for me...
