Notes: My second book, “Just Beyond the Light”, comes out February 18, 2025. Due to the fact that I am a somewhat well-known musician, the publishers once again wanted my face on the cover. Just like with my last book, “Dark Days”, this was the very last thing I wanted— it feels rather arrogant to me— but that’s the way of the publishing business I suppose. I shot my own portrait for the cover of my last book, and decided to do so again— why pay someone else? I wanted the photograph to visually represent the book’s title, so I built a fire in my backyard, set up a tripod, and used a remote shutter to shoot with. It was a steamy June night, and I needed a significant amount of fire to illuminate myself— I kept adding more and more wood, sweating my ass off, being eaten alive by mosquitos, and kneeling in the dirt beside the fire for quite some time before I got the exposure right. I always have fun shooting other people, but this was a fairly miserable experience. I am satisfied with the final result— the photograph looks different on the book cover (a graphic designer took it and made various adjustments), but this is the original. People love to take selfies all day long these days, but here’s an actual self-portrait, the product of the worst photo shoot I have ever been on. I would give myself a terrible Yelp review if I could.
