Notes: Hurricane Florence touched down near Wilmington, sending floods throughout the Cape Fear area. I have many friends and family in the region, so after the storm had passed I headed down there to see what help I could provide. My friend Doug was also in the area— he’s a NYC firefighter and Marine Corps veteran who volunteers in his downtime to do disaster relief work. When natural disasters strike, he and his team go in, figure things out, and move swiftly to provide assistance where it is most needed. Relief organizations like the Red Cross do wonderful work, but are large and slow moving, hindered by bureaucracy and the complex logistics inherent to any large group. Dougie has no such restraints, and he doesn’t fuck around— a NYC attitude and Marine Corps background has no time for that. We met up in Wilmington, I used my local connections to find out what areas needed supplies the most, put out the call for help from lamb of god fans on my social media, and the next morning we were on the move unloading Red Cross trucks of water and emergency supplies in flooded out trailer parks. It was a great few days of work with my friend. At night we wandered through the eerily silent streets of downtown Wilmington, flooded by the high tides of the mighty Cape Fear river. I am always struck by the strangely beautiful stillness that settles over a place after a hurricane has passed...
